The main criteria for a modern fiber line are lower capital costs, lower operating costs and reduced environmental impact compared with existing operations. Improved design for modernization projects can yield an increase in quality and production while saving process chemicals. The Valmet fiberline design for non-woods is derived from the latest wood fiberline technology which is exemplified in this paper. The paper describes improvement in non-wood fiber lines, an area which holds the greatest potential for reforms within the field of fiber processing. The Valmet fiber line design is shown to reduce effluent, improve pulp quality and lower the investment cost compared with other available designs. A detailed description of a low effluent bleaching sequence based on oxygen and peroxide is'presented.
