This paper presents a conceptual schema for the description and retrieval of images. The classes represented in this schema describe digital static images in general (drawings, paintings, slides, photographs, or any pictorial representation), specifying their properties, and also making it possible to describe components contained in the image as well as their relationships. These descriptors also allow the identification of image objects, which are versions of other images, and the types of associations existing between them. The proposed schema considers not only technical information but also information related to the semantic content of the image, providing a systematic and detailed specification of the descriptor elements of static digital images, that can be used in any existing metadata framework.
