摘要

The Raman time constant (T_R) used in the geenralized nonlinear Schrodinger equation is determined experimentally to be around 1550 nm, based on the Raman self-frequency shift in standard single mode fibre. The measured effective value of the T_R is found to be 3.0 fs. Detailed error analysis shows that the uncertainty in the measurement is less than +-1.0fs. Accurate knowledge of the value of the T_R is essential in modeling subpicosecond pulse propagation in optical fibres.
