Fault-analysis and precaution of shafting torsion vibration on ships

Torsion vibration is one of important performance of the engine equipment ont ships. Serious torsion vibration will result in fatigue breaking of cranks, the stern shaft and the propeller shaft, fatigue pitting of the surface layrs of the gear teeth, gear teeth breakage, damage of the coupling with elastic elements breakage, damage of the coupling with elastic elements and wearing of bearings on the shafting. It will greatly harm the stability of propelling shafting on ships and running safety. By measuring, calculating and analysing typical faults on five ships (the dragging ship, fisher ship and cargo ship), we think it's the main cause of torsion vibration faults that the shaft's additional stress is bigger than permitted stress when the shafting works on the critical velocity. The couupling of torsion vibrating and axial vibrating will result in further expanding of the shaft's creakle and acceleratig fatigue breaking.
