Batch distillation is used extensively in laboratory and in production of high value- added,low-volume phannaceuticals and fine chemicals.The flexibility of batch distillation,combined with its unsteady nature of the process,poses challenging design,operation and optimization problems for engineers [1].A rigorous model for the batch distillation involves solving several stiff ordinary differential equations.In this work the batch distillation in the fmal separation of a commercial bulk drug was modeled mathematically to optimize the separation process for yield increase and cycle time reduction.The effects of column theoretical plate,reflux ratio,low-boil concentration in the feed,column holdup and condenser vacuum on product yield and cycle time were investigated.
