Cooperative work is characterized by its dynamic nature and transient work arrangements. It requires computer support systems to support teams, allocate responsibilities, and set up support services. The paper suggests that such services can only be provided using toolkits, which that allow users to synthesize systems directly at the user interface. It then describes requirements placed on such toolkits by the nature of coolaborative work and describes a prototype toolkit that meets such requirements, including the interface provided to users anddatabases to support cooperative needs.
