In this talk, we provide a guided tour of the essential elements of three potent tools of optimization and control which individually are powerful, but their adroit use in a hybrid mode, possessed the power to push the frontiers of systems engineering to unimaginable heights. Specifically, we consider fuzzy dynamic programming, genetic algorithms and intelligent control. What are these bodies of knowledge? What, if any, are their relationships, and low can they be hybridized to model and solve thorny system problems which have hitherto eluded the solo application of the tools. We present both the aspects that are now classic in any discussion of the topic as well as their modern variant.
