Based on a linear two-port network, a time-domain model of a microstrip discontinuity is introduced, which includes transient characteristic impedances, transient input impedances and transient transfer functions. The numerical deconvolution technique is adopted to synthesize the model from the response voltages and currents at ports of the discontinuity simulated by the FDTD. With the model, transient responses of the discontinuity with any excitation and any load can be rapidly obtained by one-dimension convolution operation, instead of use of the time-consuming four-dimension FDTD again. Application to microstrip step show a good efficiency and accuracy of this method.
