摘要

The banana is a critically important agricultural product of the French West Indies (Guadeloupe and Martinique). This crop requires intensive use of pesticides to prevent insect attack and severe crop loss. Chlorinated pesticides such as hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), chlordecone (CLD, known as kepone) and dieldrin were used for decades until the beginning of the 1990s, resulting in widespread contamination of soils and water in the banana producing areas; hence the need to develop solutions for cleanup polluted sites. This study focuses on the identification of bacteria able to degrade HCH and chlordecone under aerobic or anaerobic conditions in polluted soil samples collected from banana producing areas in Guadeloupe (French West Indies).
