Background/Objectives. A pilot study was conducted at a former industrial facility located in New Jersey to evaluate the effectiveness of the Primawave Sidewinder pressure pulse injection tool in enhancing the radius of influence (ROI) and distribution of reagents within the subsurface. The pressure pulse technology, originally developed for the oil and gas industry, generates a fluid pressure pulse to cause a momentary elastic flexure of the pore structure; thereby, improving the distribution of liquid reagents through low to moderate permeability soils. In situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) technology consisting of modified Fenton’s reagent activated sodium persulfate (MASP) was utilized to conduct three tests (i.e., Tests 1, 2 and 3). The reagents injected consisted of chelated-iron catalyst, stabilized hydrogen peroxide and sodium persulfate. The persulfate activation using MASP is achieved via a combination of iron, hydrogen peroxide and/or free radicals. Two injection point types were tested-direct push (DPT) with laser-cut stainless steel screens and chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) with 10-slot CPVC screen; and two injection point head types were tested-injection head with Sidewinder and standard injection head (i.e., constant pressure with no Sidewinder).
