Background/Objectives. Site closure is the ultimate goal of most remediation programs that address groundwater impacts. Remediation can consist of one of many types of active approaches, monitored natural attenuation, or a combination of these. In addition, the endpoint required at a given project is a function of the regulatory program and the groundwater standards applied to the site. To evaluate remedial strategies at current sites, a database of case studies was evaluated to address the following key questions: What common factors led to closure among the sites? Is expediting closure through remediation cheaper in the long run in comparison with monitored natural attenuation based on net present value? What was the most commonly applied groundwater technology at these closed sites?
