Chloroform Abiotic Degradation Lines of Evidence from a Full-Scale Field Study

Background/Objectives. This paper presents several lines of evidence detailing abiotic degradation of chloroform in a full-scale project. The presentation will cover a successful case study involving the treatment of a chloroform plume with initial concentrations up to 15 milligrams per liter (mg/L). Treatment consisted of injection of a sodium lactate solution into a saprolite and fractured bedrock aquifer. The degree of success achieved in the remediation exceeded expectations. The results also presented a variety of positive outcomes which suggested the possibility of different pathways of chloroform treatment. Recent work has provided new understanding into remediation of this “recalcitrant” compound.
