摘要

Background/Objectives. Indian Island is considered the center of the Wiyot Tribe’s universe and is the site of the Tribe’s annual World Renewal Ceremony. The Wiyot people inhabited Indian Island and the land around Humboldt Bay since prehistoric times. The first recorded Euro-American settlement of Indian Island occurred in 1858. A few years later, on February 26, 1860, settlers massacred an estimated 180 Wiyot people gathered for the World Renewal Ceremony at the Tuluwat Village site. Settlers claimed land on the island and began constructing a series of dikes and drains in order to maximize the extent of developable land and to raise cattle.
