Background/Objectives. In the process of downsizing its manufacturing footprint, DSM Pharmaceuticals, Inc., has undertaken an ambitious goal of deconstructing a large portion of its Greenville, NC, facility. Over the years, the site has been the location of multiple RCRA investigations resulting in identification of several areas contaminated by a variety of constituents. DSM faced the task of remediating soil from multiple widespread areas in a cost-effective manner while maintaining operations. Chloroform, tetrachloroethane (TeCA), ethylbenzene, and toxaphene challenged site management to select a simple, sustainable technology to remediate the affected areas. After an extensive technology evaluation and bidding process, ex situ thermal treatment using mobile steam distillation units (MSDU) was selected to meet the need to treat the soil without off-site, costly, and unsustainable transportation and disposal.
