Background. The continuous release of manufactured nanoparticles (MNPs) into the environment has been increasing concern about the nanotoxicty to living organisms. A large number of studies have investigated the effect on plants regarding uptake and translocation. However, the information that has been provided without intensive exploration for cellular response of plant is limited to explain the effect of metal MNPs on growth in physiological manner. Nano zerovalent iron (nZVI), one of iron MNPs that became the most prominent material in groundwater and soil remediation, shows remarkable redox potential not found in their micron scale counterparts. Once nZVI is injected into subsurface and dispersed in unconfined acquifer with groundwater flow, possibly approaching to aquatic and terrestrial organisms. However, contrary to usage of thousand tons of nZVI, study focusing on the biocompatibility of plants to nZVI is still limited.
