Background/Objectives. A study of in situ remediation performance at more than 200 chlorinated solvent groundwater source zone sites was conducted as part of an ESTCP research project. The U.S. EPA has estimated that about $6-8 billion is spent annually for cleanup at hazardous waste sites in the U.S. alone, with much of these funds directed toward the cleanup of solvents (U.S. EPA, 2004). To make this large investment in remediation more effective, end-users need quantitative, accurate, and reliable cost and performance data for commonly used remediation technologies. The overall objective of the project was to develop a high-quality, reliable remediation performance database that can be used to help guide future decisions regarding in situ groundwater remediation. Secondary objectives included evaluation of remediation performance for projects implemented more recently versus several years ago, effects of matrix diffusion and other complex hydrogeologic settings on remediation performance, evaluation of rebound and sustained treatment, benefits of treatment trains, and evaluation of remediation costs.
