Background/Objectives. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is a water-soluble compound, which is present in most fruits and vegetables and can serve as a two-electron reductant with a redox potential of-0.06 V. It can be contacted with iron minerals to produce iron (II) (coupled through a process of electron transfer), which can be used for the reductive dechlorination of chlorinated solvents such as carbon tetrachloride (CT). The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of ascorbic acid on the iron mineral induced reduction of CT in batch experiments under controlled conditions.
