Sequential reductive dehalogenation of chlorobenzenes via microbial mediated and abiotic pathways commonly stalls at monochlorobenzene (MCB) or benzene. Because of the stall, complete treatment of chlorobenzenes via reductive pathways alone has been not considered a viable remedial alternative. Instead, bioremediation of these compounds typically includes sequentially stimulating anaerobic and aerobic pathways to take advantage of thermodynamically favored reduction of more chlorine substituted benzenes and oxidation of lesser chlorine substituted benzenes.
