Do Australian Cleanup Projects Currently Accord with the Concept of Sustainable Remediation?(PPT)

“Sustainable remediation” is a topic of intense debate in Australia. The initiatives in the USA and UK involving the formation of a Sustainable Remediation Forum (SuRF) are being closely watched, and a similar body has been formed—SuRF Australia. SuRF Australia has prepared a draft Framework for Sustainable Remediation and Management of contaminated sites. This is consistent with a similar Framework prepared by SuRF UK. A core objective of sustainable remediation is to seek to achieve a balance between the various environmental, economic and social aspects of the project, and a set of indicators to measure this has been proposed in the draft Framework. This paper examines whether the Australian regulatory system already allows for project outcomes that are in good accord with the Framework.
