The lack of accurate and technically defensible estimates of source mass and persistence is a major obstacle for determining the optimal path to cleanup at nearly all facilities impacted by non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs). The objective of this project was to demonstrate an innovative technique for estimating the mass of NAPL in subsurface source zones, NAPL persistence into the future and the potential impact of NAPL source reduction on contaminant mass discharge. This technique was performed before and after a field-scale pilot test of thermal remediation of fuel NAPL conducted by the U.S. Air Force at the former Williams Air Force Base (WAFB), Arizona. At WAFB, a rising water table over the last two decades has created a submerged, 70-foot smear zone of multi-component fuel NAPL that is a long-term source of benzene and other NAPL components to groundwater.
