Commonly used in the dry cleaning industry, tetrachloroethylene (PCE) is a major contaminant of soil and groundwater. Further, because of its physical characteristic as a DNAPL, its general resistance to natural degradation processes, and its sequential chemical reduction into relatively more toxic degradation products, PCE is difficult to remediate and presents a collective risk to human health, the environment, and the beneficial use of impacted properties. This paper presents a case study that summarizes a comprehensive site characterization and remediation program used to remediate a PCE plume released at a retail dry cleaning business in Fremont, California.
