This is a site in Mexico surrounded by residences, schools, and small retail businesses where former manufacturing operations utilized chlorinated solvents that were stored in aboveground storage tanks (ASTs). After the manufacturing was terminated and facilities were demolished, environmental investigations revealed the presence of tetrachloroethene (PCE), trichloroethene (TCE), 1,2-dichloroethene (cis- and trans-) (DCE), and vinyl chloride (VC) in soils and groundwater beneath the former locations of the ASTs. A bench-scale treatability study was performed and concluded that ISCO technology using permanganate is feasible. The recommended method for applying ISCO in the DNAPL source zone was soil mixing in order to achieve more effective contact and treatment, especially in the clay layer the top of which is located at approximately 6 meters (m) below ground surface (bgs).
