Sustainable remediation incorporates certain practices to balance factors for the benefit of environmental stewardship, economic growth and quality of life. A former automobile part manufacturing facility in Queens, New York, had chlorinated volatile organic compound (CVOC) contamination in groundwater. The site's 1-acre, six-story building was languishing and redevelopment was complicated by vapor intrusion concerns. An integrated remedial approach was developed that expedited installation and startup of the vapor mitigation system, which allowed building redevelopment 2 years ahead of source and plume remediation. By incorporating green and sustainable remediation (GSR) approaches into the remedy selection and design process, this project was able to significantly reduce its overall environmental footprint and expedite the building redevelopment into the largest urban rooftop agricultural facility in New York City. Additional GSR approaches were integrated to expedite site reuse, decrease the carbon footprint of system operations, allow for energy-efficient optimization throughout the remedy lifetime, and reduce the environmental effect of long-term site management.
