Assessment and remediation activities conducted at international sites can be challenging where technical resources are limited. A variety of innovative tools were used at a field site in Southeast Asia (the “Site”) to inform remediation decisions and evaluate remediation system performance. Depth-discrete monitoring of benzene and sulfate was useful to evaluate the performance of an air sparging (AS) and soil vapor extraction (SVE) system at the Site. A variety of tools were also used to demonstrate that declining benzene concentrations were due, in part, to intrinsic biodegradation prior to AS/SVE. Two-dimensional compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) measuring changes in stable isotope ratios for both carbon and hydrogen was used to demonstrate benzene biodegradation at the Site. The results of Bio-Sep~R1 technology deploying “biotraps” coupled with stable isotope probing in monitoring wells confirmed the anaerobic biodegradation of benzene.
