It is increasingly recognized that conventional large-scale Darcy's Law-type estimates of groundwater velocity are largely insensitive to local-scale heterogeneities that control advective flow rate and direction. Furthermore, discrete-time water-level measurements may not accurately characterize the effects and significance of hydraulic transients (e.g., tidal effects, pumping schedules). A newly developed instrument capable of measuring transient and local-scale groundwater flow velocity and direction in situ was tested at a site with spatially and temporally variable groundwater flow conditions.
