Biogeochemical transformation of trichloroethene (TCE) via formations of reactive iron minerals without accumulation of toxic daughter products such as cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cis-1,2-DCE) and vinyl chloride (VC) is highly desirable. Different geochemical parameters influence such processes differently. A fractional factorial experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence and significance of biogeochemical factors such as sources of iron, sulfate, electron donor, residence time, and pH. Principal coordinates analysis (PCo) and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used in combination to (1) elucidate biogeochemical factors that are most influential in the abiotic transformation of TCE and (2) identify biogeochemical parameters that are indicative of such a transformation. Preliminary results indicate that the presence of hematite or magnetite, groundwater sulfate, vegetable oil, and high residence time can create an environment conducive to biogeochemical transformation of TCE. Biogeochemical transformation of TCE is indicated by removal of TCE without accumulation of daughter products, high sulfate consumption, and high methane production.
