摘要

An active, high-security military facility in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States has elevated levels of aromatic and nitroaromatic compounds in soils and groundwater. Since the mid-1950s, this site has been the location of largescale military practice activities. In the late 1990s, concerns were raised regarding the potential for contaminants to escape to neighboring properties. Mechanical remediation efforts were initiated and the bulk of the contaminants were removed. However, recalcitrant concentrations of contaminants, including RDX, remained. The current site objective is to understand the indigenous, subsurface microbial ecology of the site in an effort to best evaluate and stimulate ongoing in situ biological attenuation of RDX and other nitroaromatics in the groundwater.
