A Treatability Study (TS) has been completed within a paleochannel aquifer located hydraulically downgradient from a lake at a former launch facility at Vandenberg Air Force Base. The groundwater aquifer is characterized by permeable, dune sands deposited within a channel eroded from marine shale bedrock providing a location for a pilot test in an area of hydrologic control. Groundwater in the paleochannel contains elevated concentrations of sulfate and chlorinated solvents. Lake sediments have created a natural reducing environment in groundwater upgradient of the paleochannel; here, the primary contaminant trichloroethene (TCE) has been completely degraded into a downgradient plume comprising degradation daughter products czs-1,2-dichloroethene (DCE) and vinyl chloride (VC).
