Geospatial information needs in forest industry

Geospatial information needs in forest industry are changing as a result of evolution in the forestry business. Forestry businesses are looking outward rather than inward, which requires more types of data and more accurate data than we have justified and used in the past. However, there will always be data limitations primarily due to the extensive geographic scope of a forest ownership, the many different types of data that are needed to make decisions in forestry, and the lack of justification for large expenditures on data. Forestry data is getting more expensive, but also more necessary. We will not be able to provide all the data that everyone wants. The challenge we face is to find the best balance between data cost and data need.
