The voice service over IP networks (VoIP), as a supplement, substitution or evolution of classic telephone service, is being developed due mainly to economical reasons. However, it faces the lack of quality of service (QoS) guarantees in IP networks. The joint use of the QoS scheme proposed by the IETF and the VoIP architecture proposed by the ITU-T (H.323) implies a number of interoperation issues that must be addressed. On one hand, it is necessary to maintain information on the users' authorization in each of the systems. On the other, both services must be billed. This article first describes the state of art of QoS in IP networks and H.323. Next, five architectures for the integration of the IETF QoS and the H.323 schemas are proposed. For each of these architectures, features, advantages and shortcomings are analyzed. Finally, three scenarios using the proposed architectures are studied.
