摘要

Carbon fibers (CFs) possess outstanding mechanical properties and relatively low density, therefore, they are now being used commercially in structural reinforcement composites in aerospace structures, automotive applications and windmill blades for enhanced fuel efficiency and ergonomics. The vast majority of commercial CFs are currently produced from a synthetic precursor polyacrylonitrile (PAN) via wet spinning. However, the wet-spinning process itself involves the use of hazardous solvents, and the nitrile group generates toxic by-products (viz. hydrogen cyanide) during heat-treatment [1,2].
