The electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) is an electric energy storage device based on the dielectric property of the electric double layer at the interface between electrolyte and a nanoporous carbon electrode such as activated carbon. The charge-discharge process is non-faradaic ion adsorption / desorption on micropore in activated carbon electrode, so the EDLC has excellent power density and charge-discharge cycle life. The market of the EDLC has been now still growing since the commercialization as memory back-up device in the 1970s. The EDLC is recently practically used as power sources for dynamic voltage compensator or fast-start-up type copier and also expected as the promising systems for electric energy storage. However, the energy density of the EDLC is lower than that of rechargeable batteries such as the lithium ion battery, therefore it should be further improved for energy storage applications.
