Because of their biocompatibility, non-toxic, wide excitation and narrow emission characteristics, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) become a star fluorescent material in recent years. But the simple and mild preparation of GQDs is still challenging, and the origin of their fluorescent properties is still controversial because of their complex structures and non-stoichiometric compositions. Herein, we prepared GQDs by liquid-phase oxidation of graphite oxide. The GQDs were further step-wise reduced by hydrazine to prepare reduced quantum dots (RQD).
