ACTIVATED CARBONS BY NITROGEN DOPED CHEMICAL ACTIVATION AND THEIR PERFORMANCE IN ELECTRICAL DOUBLE LAYER CAPACITORS
Chemical activation by alkali compounds such as KOH is well known for the making process of high surface area activated carbons, but sometimes it had difficulties because of generation of metallic potassium and H2. In comparison with KOH, K2CO3 activation is very inert and safe but it is also known that cannot generate high porosity carbons. A novel chemical activation method by K2CO3 with doping of nitrogen compounds to carbon raw materials is under development. We investigated the Australian Loy Yang Brown coal as carbon raw material and urea or melamine as nitrogen compound. We developed activated carbon which has specific surface area of over 2,000m~2/g and Meso pore ratio of over 40% by charging weight ratio of 1:1:2 as Brown coal: Urea: K2CO3 and activation at 900 °C . The performance of this carbon as electrical double layer capacitor gives the specific capacity of 36F/g and 18F/cc.
