Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary is a heterothallic oomycete with two mating types designated as A1 and A2. Sexual reproduction and oospore formation of this species can only occur when isolates of both mating types are present. Recently, several research groups have reported the presence of isolates with A2 mating type in China. However, the mating type composition within the P. infestans population in major potato producing regions of Yunnan Province has not been documented. Results of an investigation into this aspect are briefly reported here.
