Potyviral helper component-proteinase (HC-Pro) is a multifunctional protein which involves in proteolytic cleavage of the polyprotein, aphid transmission of virus, virus replication and symptom expression, cell-to-cell and long distance movement of potyviruses, and inhibit gene-silencing mechanism of host plants, thus causing drastic increase in symptom severity and accumulation of synergic virus. Much work has been done on the mechanism of HC-Pro in aphid transmission of potyviruses. Some researchers suggested that HC-Pro acts as a "bridge" between aphid and virus particles.
