The option of replacing the entire planetary cooler arrangement with a grate cooler was examined as a potential alternative to the repair project. While the repair option is initially the cheaper solution, it has a number of disadvantages - i.e.i. The problem of tyres cracking is not removed.ii. The new cooler brackets will presumably result in a stiffer shell, thus accentuating the tyre cracking problem.iii. The repair time is quite long.One of the advantages of grate cooler option was that it opened up the potential to increase production capacity.A number of plants were visited to evaluate the options. Of particular interest were plants where the conversion from planetary to grate had been performed, and also plants equipped with the latest grate cooler design, where discrete control of airflow to different sections of the grate is possible.
