The trend for miniaturization of computers, camcorders and mobile phones has led to an unprecedented development in the area of novel rechargeable battery Systems. Of the numerous systems that have been studied mainly two systems, theNickel-Metalhydride (NiMH) and file Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) system have reached a breakthrough on the worldwide consumer market. The energy density and shelf life of both systems are excellent as well as their potential for further improvements. By the useof new and low cost materials both systems will - besides the consumer market - conquer new markets like electric vehicles and industrial applications.
