Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (COFDM) is a multiple carrier modulation method that exhibits high spectral efficiency and low susceptibility to multipath fading. COFDM uses the fast Fourier transform (FFT) for efficient modulation and demodulation and relies heavily on error control coding for reliable performance. This paper describes the theory behind OFDM, along with the requirements which must be met for OFDM to perform well in the frequency selective fading environment. Simulations demonstrate QPSK mapped COFDM performs well in a two-ray model of the multipath fading environment with parameters typically encountered in military telemetry.
