Proper waste management techniques can have a profound effect on the global environment. Lithium ion battery technology, as used in the automotive industry by way of electric vehicles, presents an opportunity in which battery waste managementpractices can be established to protect the environment and reduce corporate costs. Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and the Sony Corporation have collaborated efforts to produce the new Altra EV; an electric vehicle which is powered by Sony Lithium Ion batterytechnology. A model program to properly recycle/reuse components of lithium ion batteries contained within 30 demonstration fleet vehicles has been developed to reduce negative environmental impacts. This paper will introduce the significance of thisinitiative.
