The effect of two different feed medication strategies on finishing pig health and performance

A commercial three-site pork production system in the Midwest had been experiencing reduced performance 8-12 weeks post-placement into finishing units. This "18 week wall" has been described as a multifactorial production problem in grower-finisher pigs, characterized by a marked decrease in performance at 18+ weeks of age, and often associated with respiratory disease. Multiple infectious agents have been associated with the 'wall' including Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome virus (PRRSv), swine influenza virus (SIV), Pasteurella multocida, Streptococcus suis and porcine respiratory coronavirus (PRCV).
