Swine influenza serological monitoring: a new competitive elisa

The family Orthomyxoviridae comprises the genus Influenzavirus A and B, which contains influenza A and influenza B species, and the genus Influenzavirus C, which contains one species, influenza C virus. Influenza A is of considerable interest to veterinarians, as different strains cause respiratory problems in swine, equine, and avian species, as well as in humans (1). The three influenzavirus species, A, B, and C have no shared antigens. Influenza A virus is divided into subtypes, which differ in their hemagglutinin (H) and/or neuraminidase (N). So far, 14 subtypes of H (H1-H14) and 9 of N (N1-N9) have been identified. Swine influenza is 'one of the most prevalent respiratory disease in swine throughout the world (2). Recently, H1N1 strains from swine were classified in three groups: classical H1N1, avian-like swine H1N1 and avian HI (3). The distinct antigenic variant of H1N1 subtypes are currently cocirculating in swine in different parts of the world (4). Moreover, swine may also be infected with H3N2 subtype and there is substantial evidence that genetic reassortment between influenza viruses in pigs can occur in nature (5, 6). So far, the different variants and subtypes of influenza virus cocirculating in pigs present a potential for the emergence of new strains by genetic reassortment.
