Obtaining an ABVP certification for diplomate status in swine health management

The ABVP celebrated its 20th Anniversary in 1998. In 1978 the AVMA House of Delegates approved the ABVP as a Veterinary Specialty Organization. To date, the ABVP has certified 582 Diplomates in eight practice categories, making it the fourth largest AVMA Veterinary Specialty Board. ABVP is the only AVMA Specialty Board that requires recertification every ten years. The founders of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners felt that all specialty boards should exist for the benefit of the patient and the public. ABVP was to be a goal for clinicians in public and private practice much the same as the American College of Physicians and the American Board of Family Physicians. These organizations and ABVP certify practitioners with exceptional knowledge, skill, and competency in the care of the "total patient."
