Hemolytic E. coli and edema disease

Hemolytic E. coli cause diarrhea in neonatal pigs and diarrhea and edema disease in weaned pigs. Vaccines have been used for years to prevent diarrhea in neonates. These vaccines prevent diarrhea by inducing passive anti-adhesin antibodies that prevent colonization of the intestinal tract by E. coli. An active immune response is required to prevent colonization by E. coli in the intestinal tract and prevent disease in weaned pigs. Non-vaccine approaches also offer promise for the prevention of E. coli disease, especially in weaned pigs.
