Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is one of the most economically significant viral diseases of the swine industry today. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) was first identified in 1991. Since that time, veterinarians and researchers have developed strategies for controlling the spread of the virus and preventing clinical disease. Partial depopulation (PD) has been an effective strategy in controlling or preventing the spread of PRRS virus in infected nursery or finishing populations. While PD has been demonstrated to be an effective strategy, it can be logistically difficult to implement under certain circumstances, such as periods of cold weather, and when there are large inventories to depopulate. A recent study demonstrated that the strategic use of a modified-live PRRS vaccine (RespPRRS, Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health/NOBL Labs, St. Joseph, Missouri) in a mass vaccination and unidirectional pig flow strategy was effective at controlling the spread and enhancing the elimination of PRRS virus in a finishing population of pigs. This protocol offers a strategy for the control of PRRS virus spread which does not require the complete depopulation of a swine facility. The purpose of this paper is to describe the application of mass vaccination and unidirectional pig flow for the control and elimination of PRRS virus in a single site farm.
