A model for calculating the laser-driven flyer movement and the shock initiation of explosive specimens impacted by the flyer has been proposed in this paper, and results in the critical parameters for the flyer to initiate PBX9404 explosive, that is well consistent with the experimental data of Trott's and ours. A Nd-glass Q-switched laser with maximum output 0.7J and pulse duration 20~30ns, some quartz fiber optics of 0.7mm in diameter and 20~40cm in length and a VISAR equipment to measure the flyer's velocity history were employed in the experiments. When the incident laser flux was 1.3GW/cm~2 spallation in an 0.4mm thick aluminum target impacted by a laser driven Mylar flyer occurred.
