DECISION PROCESS AND EXPERIENCE IN REPAIRING A WRECKED TURBINE-GENERATOR Eastman Chemical Company Tennessee Eastman Division

Tennessee Eastman Division operates nineteen turbine-generators in three powerhouses. In December 1995, unit Number 10 oversped, which resulted in total destruction of the generator and significant damage to the turbine. This paper details the project to replace the generator with a used larger unit and repairs to the turbine including shaft replacement. Several problems arose during the project, including rotor modeling predicting a first torsional near running speed, coupling design concerns, and rotor modifications to fit the physical space requirements. Coordinating the project presented major problems because seven subcontractors including repair shops were involved.
