EPA's risk assessment tool for the metal finishingindustry is described in a companion paper to this one: Lorber &co-authors, A Risk Assessment Tool for the Metal FinishingIndustry (included in this proceedings). The most challengingaspect to producing this risk assessment tool is characterizingindoor and outdoor emissions of contaminants from metalfinishing line processes. These emissions drive indoor workerexposures and outdoor nearby resident exposures. This toolcontains default source emission rates of 22 contaminants for 15different line processes. This paper describes the line processesand generation of emission rates for these processes. Thecompanion paper shows how these default sourcecharacterizations fit into the risk assessment tool in general.
