LCOS technology offers the possibility for high resolution projection displays. As the resolution increases, the pixel size decreases. For very small pixel sizes, fringe field and diffraction effects will reduce the total light output, and lead to incorrect representation of information and a loss of detail and sharpness. In this paper we will present our calculations on the diffraction effects of microdisplays with decreasing pixel size, and compare them to fringe field effects. It will appear that fringe field effects are much more important than diffraction, for cell gaps in the 3-5μm range.
