Calculating Weapon Fratricide Probability between Two Weapon Systems

Weapon fratricide is a long standing weapon system safety concern, and calculating the probability of fratricide has proven to be technically challenging. This paper discusses the development of a tool for calculating fratricide probabilities between a gun projectile and other ship fired ordnance. Incorporated into this tool will be the flexibility to analyze any combination of ship, layout, gun, and ship launched ordnance system. Various data will be input into this tool and mathematically manipulated to calculate the probability of fratricide using solid angle geometry. These calculations will take into account the ordnance fly-out paths as well as the slewing action of the gun. Development of this application will increase the weapon system safety engineer's ability to accurately predict the potential for fratricide between various shipboard weapons systems and quantify the risk of personnel injury and equipment damage.
